Poveglia Island

The Haunting

Poveglia Island served as a plague quarantine station where over 160,000 people died. The soil is literally 50% human ash. In the 1920s, a mental hospital was built on the island where a sadistic doctor performed gruesome experiments on patients. Visitors report hearing screams carried on the wind, seeing apparitions of plague victims, and feeling an overwhelming sense of dread.
